FOCUS POCUS

Focus Pocus® was A-dapt’s first Adaptive Media® project, developed in response to COVID-19 and funded by Innovate UK as part of its emergency innovation programme. The idea was inspired by first-hand experience of children learning from home during lockdown, where sustaining attention during screen-based learning proved far more challenging outside the classroom.

Focus Pocus is a perceptive digital owl that helps children maintain focus by measuring and rewarding attention during learning sessions. Using privacy-first Edge AI running entirely in the browser, it responds to human factors such as attention, positivity and engagement without filming, recording or using facial recognition. Parents set age range, attention level and session time, and Focus Pocus monitors progress throughout the activity.

The project formed the basis of an early adaptive maths curriculum and was developed further with White Rose Maths as part of a Year 4 catch-up trial. Focus Pocus was shortlisted for Best COVID-19 Innovation at the CogX Awards, alongside organisations such as AstraZeneca, demonstrating how small, UK-funded innovation can deliver meaningful impact.
